Educational Statistics

Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the few places in the world where poverty is increasing, mainly because the percentage of people that get a primary education continues to fall. We want to make sure that the people can take hold of opportunities that education provides

β€œIn South Africa, dropout has reached a national crisis. Approximately 60% of first graders will ultimately drop out rather than complete 12th Grade. Likewise, by Grade 12, only 52% of the age-appropriate population remain enrolled.”
*(Department of Basic Education, Republic of South Africa, 2015)

38.9% of South African seniors graduated in 2019: schools in town make up 25% of the population and graduate close to 99% of their students, while township schools are left with less than 10% graduating. To add to the atrocity, the system has been oversimplified to help the students of the townships matriculate; for instance, on a grading scale of 100%, to pass you now only need to score 30% in most subjects. That means there are 89 out of 100 students within the locations who are unable to score 30% on all their core subjects (many times this even excludes math and sciences).
